What To Expect During Your First IV Therapy Appointment

If you've been curious about IV therapy but feel a little hesitant to actually book that first appointment, you're in good company. Walking into something new, especially something that involves a needle, can feel a little intimidating. The good news? It's simpler, more comfortable, and more relaxing than most people expect.

At Iowa IV, we've welcomed thousands of first-time clients across our Des Moines, Ankeny, and Mills Civic locations, and we've designed every step of the experience to feel approachable. Here's exactly what you can expect from start to finish.

Before You Arrive

Booking is straightforward

You can book online in just a few minutes. Pick your preferred location, choose a time that fits your schedule, and you're set. If you're not sure which IV package is right for you, don't worry about it, our staff is here to guide you.

;Filling out your intake form

After booking, you'll receive a digital intake form. This isn't busywork. It's how we get to know you before you walk in the door. We'll ask about your health history, current medications, what you're hoping to feel better about (energy, recovery, sleep, immunity, mental clarity, etc.), and anything else we should know. Take a few minutes with it. The more we know, the better we can tailor your experience.

A few simple prep tips

  • Hydrate well the day before and the morning of your appointment. Well-hydrated veins are easier to access, which makes the IV insertion smoother and faster.
  • Eat a light meal beforehand. No need to fast; in fact, we recommend you don't.
  • Wear something comfortable with sleeves that roll up easily. We'll be accessing a vein in your arm, so easy access matters.
  • Give yourself permission to relax. Most clients describe their session as the most peaceful 45 minutes of their week.

When You Arrive

You'll be greeted by our team and shown to a clean, comfortable space with reclining chairs, soft lighting, and a calm atmosphere. We designed it to feel less like a clinic and more like somewhere you actually want to be.

Your Medical History

Before any IV is started, you'll have a short conversation with one of our registered nurses. This is where we go deeper than the intake form. We'll talk through:

  • What's going on with your body and how you've been feeling lately
  • Your goals, whether that's bouncing back from a hard week, supporting an immune system that's been struggling, prepping for a big event, or just feeling more like yourself again
  • Which IV package might fit best, plus add-ons like NAD, glutathione, ALA, NAC, or extra dose of Vitamin C that can layer in for specific goals
  • Any questions you've been holding onto

If you walked in unsure which IV to choose, this is where we'll give you a clear recommendation based on what you've shared. No pressure, no upsell, we want you to leave feeling great about both the experience and the choice you made.

The IV Itself

Insertion

Once you're settled in your chair and we've talked everything through, your provider will clean the area, find a good vein, and insert the IV. Most first-timers tell us afterward: "That was it?" The pinch is brief, typically less than a second, and once the catheter is in place, you don't feel it.

If you're someone who gets nervous around needles, just tell us. We do this all day, every day, and we have plenty of tricks to make it easier. Looking away, taking a slow breath, and chatting with your provider all help.

Settling in

With the IV running, you can do whatever helps you unwind. Read, scroll, watch a show, close your eyes, or bring a friend and book chairs side-by-side. Most IVs take 45 to 60 minutes.

A few sensations are normal during the IV:

  • A cool feeling along your arm
  • A slight vitamin taste in the back of your throat from the B vitamins (totally normal and short-lived)
  • A growing sense of being more awake, hydrated, and clear-headed as the session progresses

You won't be left alone. Your comfort is the priority.

After Your Appointment

When your IV finishes, we'll remove the IV, apply a small bandage, and you're free to go.

A few quick aftercare notes:

  • Keep the bandage on for an hour or two to prevent bruising
  • Drink water throughout the day to compound the hydration benefits
  • Skip the alcohol that evening so your body can fully absorb everything you just took in
  • Pay attention to how you feel over the next couple of days; that's useful information when planning your next visit
  • We will check in with you the following day to see how you are feeling

What About Coming Back?

Most of our clients don't stop at one visit. IV therapy works best as part of a routine, weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly depending on your goals. That's why we offer wellness plans and a loyalty program that make ongoing care more affordable and rewarding. We'll walk you through those options if you're interested, but there's zero pressure on your first visit. Come in, try it, and decide what fits your life.

Ready to Book?

Your first IV therapy appointment doesn't have to feel like a leap into the unknown. Now you know exactly what's going to happen, why we do it the way we do, and how to set yourself up for the best possible experience.

Whether you're looking to recover, recharge, support your immune system, or just give your body the kind of attention it doesn't usually get, we'd love to be the place you start.
